Carl & David's

2004 Ride FAQ

Why and how will you ride over 1,000 miles in 10 days?

The "Why" is simple. We're riding to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's research and treatment of cancer. We firmly believe that money is critical to success in this fight, so we are working hard to raise meaningful sums each year. As to the "how," we have mapped out a route that hopefully will avoid the summits of the Alleghenies, Poconos, Catskills and other mountain chains along the way. Beyond that, it's all about persistence.

What support will your ride have?

Carl will drive out to Cincinnati prior to the ride. David's mom, Lydia, will follow us, driving Carl's car as our support vehicle, carrying fluids, food, supplies, clothing, spare parts, bandages, duct tape, etc. and generally being available if we have a problem.

Will any of my gift go towards the expenses of your ride?

No. Our ride from Cincinnati to Sturbridge will be paid for entirely out of our own pockets, so every dollar you contribute will go to the Pan-Mass Challenge. Of that, the Pan-Mass spends only about 6% of contributed funds to run their amazing event. Everything else ($16 million last year, more than $100 million over the years) goes to Dana-Farber. This puts the Pan-Mass in the very top tier of charities in terms of efficiency.

I need to save up to send a really big gift. When is the latest that I can contribute?

While we would prefer to have your support before rolling out from Cincinnati on July 29, gifts to the PMC through the third week of October count towards this year's total. Of course, any and every gift is appreciated. You can also are welcome to give more than once, if that works for you.

Who are you?

We are Carl Howerton and David Castle. We met in college a long time ago, and have been great friends, doing crazy things together ever since. In the intervening years Carl married Laura, who was David's freshman roommate's girlfriend's roommate. Six months after Carl and Laura started going out, Carl helped set up David with Laurie, who is now his wife.

Carlsells real estate in Marshfield MA [do you have a link?] and works for the Marshfield MA School District. Carl rides in memory of his grandmother, Dorothy Ormsby [full name],, who was lost to cancer in 1999..

David runs a family business and spends a lot of time traveling` for work. David rides for survivors Marcia and Jack Gesell (Laurie's parents), and in memory of Clyo Castle, his grandfather (colon cancer - 1988), and Maryanne Hedges, his aunt (breast cancer - 1999), among others.

Are you going to do this ride again?

Almost certainly not. It is a huge commitment of time, money and effort from us. We are doing this in honor of the 25th PMC and our 5th ride, and anniversaries of this magnitude won't come around again any time soon. So, feel free to support us at an exceptional level this year, knowing that it will be a very long time (if ever) before we again ask you to support us for anything this extreme.

I'd like to come cheer you on - what's your route and schedule?

Obviously, everything is subject to change, but our anticipated route and schedule are here. If you let us when and where you'd like to meet up and provide a phone number, we'll do our best to coordinate it. We'd love to see you.

If I support your ride, will I be enabling personally destructive behavior?

Well... yes. But it's for a great cause.

What are the details for making a gift?
