Yes, We Can Make A
Difference – Together!
Together this year we are doing
something extraordinary that can make a difference.
We have always ridden together in the Pan-Mass, but this year we’re
riding as a real team, acknowledging that to be successful at something
extraordinary, you have to work together.
We are
David Castle of Cincinnati, Ohio (on the left) and Carl Howerton of Marshfield,
Mass (on the right) and this year we are riding for the fifth year in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge. What makes this ride extraordinary are
two things we are doing to go the distance.
First, we have decided to extend the
formal 200-mile ride. Yes, we have
extended this ride before and have ridden from the NY/MA border for a total of
300 miles. But this year to make
it extraordinary we have decided to ride from David’s home in
Cincinnati. Yes, you read that
correctly! We are riding from Cincinnati, OH to Provincetown, MA, which is over 1,000 miles. How far over we don’t yet know but we will be sure to give
you the final count when we are done. We will ride out from Cincinnati on
Thursday, July 29 and, barring catastrophe, will roll into Provincetown on
Sunday, August 8. And just in case
you’re wondering, no, we have not just checked out of the asylum (but our wives
are thinking of checking us in), nor have we secretly become professional cyclists or
dedicated ourselves to training like Lance Armstrong. This is going to be
profoundly difficult for both of us, but we both believe so strongly in
fighting cancer that we’re willing to do it.
Together
for four years we have been raising money for the Jimmy Fund of
the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, one of America’s premier cancer
research and treatment centers. Over the past four years riding in the PMC, we
have raised over $50,000. This
leads us to the second reason this will be an extraordinary year. With your help, in honor of the 25th PMC and our fifth PMC ride, we’re committing
ourselves to raise $25,000, to increase our cumulative fundraising total by 50%!
Why are we doing this?
The slogan
of the Pan-Mass Challenge is “Closer by the Mile.” With each mile we pedal we will be closer to our goal of riding
over 1,000 miles. We believe in
this organization, which has raised over $100 million for the fight against cancer and
gives an unprecedented 94% of monies raised to Dana-Farber. In turn, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
is consistently a frontrunner in cancer research and patient care. We know our
ride will not be easy but we are willing to go the distance because we believe in this cause
and we are asking that you go the distance with us and support us with a
extraordinary gift. Together, we will make a difference.
We
encourage you to check out our webpage of photos, maps, links, stories and
useful info at www.gothedistance.us
which we’ll update with this year’s route, schedule and stories as we go along.
You can
join us by supporting our extraordinary ride in a number of ways:
Carl’s eGift ID is CH0045. David’s eGift ID is DC0100.
If you
have any questions, or would like to coordinate meeting up with us along the
way, please call, write or email us. We’ll be thrilled to see you along the way
(especially at the top of a hill!).
